How many times have you heard that? Not too often I bet. It's usually the opposite. I've talked about losing weight and now it's time I talk about the other end of the spectrum. I was one of those people at the other end of the...stick. No pun intended.
If you're naturally slender and have a hard time gaining weight no matter how much high calorie content food you pack away, you may have been "cursed" by the family's "skinny" gene or you have a very high metabolism and you have few fat cells or all of the above. Weight training and changes in diet may alter how you look through muscle toning, but don't expect to bulk up too much.
What you should do to gain weight?
1. Have larger food portions
2. Choose foods that are high calorie content like avocado. This way you eat more high calorie food rather than eating more food
3. Exercise to increase the appetite and help you add muscle and not fat.
4. Eat at least an extra 500 calories per day
5. Eat snacks throughout the day
6. Add healthy fats to your diet such as canola, olive or peanut oil
7. Avoid saturated fats. They can increase your cholesterol.
Saturated fats include whole milk dairy products, chicken skin, bacon, sausage and many processed snack foods
8. Choose veggies, skinless poultry, fish, beans, fruits, whole grains and unrefined carbohydrates
If you have any other concerns about gaining weight, see your doctor.

I used to be thin as were both my parents when they were young. I hated it, got teased constantly and wanted to gain weight so bad. Now I wish I looked like I did...if only we could turn back the clock!

I also have inherited the "skinny" gene. I was never teased, but I sure had a difficult time gaining weight. I weighed the same in grade 7 as I did when I graduated from high school and then many years after. It was a few years ago that I finally had a weight number that consisted of 3 digits.
