Spring Has Sprung The Pollen Allergen

Friday, 14 March, 2008
So spring has sprung? No, not really here it hasn't. It's still quite chilly when the wind blows. Although I do see some daffodil stems I left behind last year slowly making it's way up from the dirt, spring can't be that far away. April showers brings May flowers and....hay fever.

Hay fever doesn't produce fevers, nor is it from hay. They are tiny pollens released from trees, plants, weeds and grass. Hay fever can also occur in the summer and fall months depending on the type of plant or tree. For some people it causes an allergic reaction. Sneezing, itching and watery eyes, itchy throat, and coughing are the most common symptoms. A skin test or blood test can show which pollen allergens you're allergic to.

If you're an allergy sufferer, you can diminish the exposure by:
*Remaining indoors in the mornings as this is when the pollen count is the highest
*Wear a face mask to filter out the pollen if you have to be outside
*Keep your windows closed
*Don't hang your clothes out to dry
*Avoid garden or grass cutting duties

Taking an OTC antihistamine can help greatly in conjunction with using a nasal decongestant or nasal steroid spray. A decongestant will relieve congestion while a nasal steroid spray will reduce inflammation. Discuss this with your doctor to find the best care for you.

Personally, I use Reactine and it's the best antihistamine for me after Seldane was pulled from the shelves.
