Breaking Out The Myth on Breast Cancer

Monday, 4 August, 2008
1. There's no family history of breast cancer, so I can't get it.
Anyone who has breasts can get breast cancer, including men. Approximately 10% of breast cancer is from inherited abnormalities and about 85% of women who developed breast cancer had no family history.

2. Breast cancer is passed from your mother.
Breast cancer genes can be inherited from your father's side of the family.

3. Breast cancer doesn't occur until after menopause.
Breast cancer can develop at any age, although the risks increase as you get older. Although doctors recommend yearly mammograms at the age of 40, if there's a family history you may start screening at a younger age.

4. Underwire bras and antiperspirants causes breast cancer.
Underwire bras don't trap toxins by limiting lymph and bloodflow to the breasts and antiperspirants or deodorants that keep the body from sweating don't contain harmful chemicals that may be absorbed through the skin.
*Side note: I'm uncertain about the absorption as I believe the skin especially under the arm which is very thin can absorb the chemical ingredients found in antiperspirants.*

5. Mammograms can prevent cancer.
Mammograms can't prevent cancer, but it can detect abnormalities found in the breast, thus getting treatment in the earliest stages.

Aww...how sad. I like Christina Applegate. I hope she's staying positive.

That was a nice information. But it makes me a little scary about the concept of breast cancer. I always believed that the disease can't affect without a family history. Most of my doubts are clarified here.

Anyone can get breast cancer with or without a family history. Having a family member just increases a person's risks.

There are also men who can get breast cancer.

I've been reading from Natural News that mammograms aren't as "safe".

Besides doing self-breast exams, I'm not sure what else you can do to detect lumps etc.

I will have to do some research.
